Establish this first, because it changes both the amount and who is allowed to do the work. Metro Detroit is mostly DTE Energy territory — Wayne, Oakland and Macomb. Consumers Energy covers parts of the outer metro. Your bill tells you which.
Two conditions catch people out: you must enrol in a DTE EV rate plan, and the work has to be done by a DTE-approved contractor. That approved list is not published — it appears inside the rebate application once you’re accepted, filtered by county.

The 30C credit covers up to $1,000 on a home charger, but since 2023 only for properties in an eligible census tract. Plenty of metro Detroit addresses qualify and plenty don’t — neighbouring streets can differ. Check yours and confirm with a tax professional; we’re a directory, not tax advisers. IRS guidance.

Much of Wayne County was wired long before anyone charged a car overnight. If you’re on 100-amp service already running a dryer, range and central air, expect a load calculation before a firm price. Ask about load management devices too — they often let a charger share an existing panel for far less than a service upgrade.
Michigan requires an electrical permit for Level 2. It’s pulled with your municipality — Detroit’s BSEED for city addresses, your own city or township elsewhere. Most installers include it, but confirm rather than assume. An unpermitted install can complicate a sale and may void a rebate.
