💰 The federal credit has an address test
The federal 30C credit covers a share of installation cost up to $1,000 on a home charger — but since 2023 it only applies to properties in an eligible census tract. If the panel needs upgrading
$1,500–$4,000 on top. Common in older housing on 100-amp service.
The variable is almost always your electrical panel, not the charger. If you’re on 100-amp service already running a dryer, range and central air, expect a load calculation before a firm price. Ask about load management devices too — they often let a charger share an existing panel for far less than a service upgrade.

Do I need a permit in Illinois?
Almost certainly. Most jurisdictions require an electrical permit for a Level 2 installation, pulled with your local municipality. Most installers include it — confirm rather than assume, since an unpermitted install can complicate a home sale and may void a rebate.
My house is on 100-amp service — is that a problem?
Not necessarily. Load management devices can let a charger share an existing panel, usually far cheaper than a service upgrade. Ask about that before agreeing to a panel replacement.
Can I claim a utility rebate and the federal credit?
Generally yes, they’re separate programmes — but you can’t recover more than you spent, and the federal credit has the census-tract restriction above.
How long does it take?
